Transform Your Life by Overcoming Anger with Expert Therapy in Minneapolis and Edina, MN

Anger is a normal human emotion that all of us have experienced in our lives. It is a normal emotional response to a situation that has been hurtful, harmful, or unfair. Anger is a way to express negative feelings.

The Nature of Anger

Anger is a normal human emotion that all of us have experienced in our lives. It is a normal emotional response to a situation that has been hurtful, harmful, or unfair. Anger is a way to express negative feelings.

Everyone expresses it differently. Anger can be problematic when it is misplaced or becomes uncontrolled. When you become angry often, or when it starts to affect your quality of life and relationships, it might be time to seek help.

Understanding Anger as a Natural Emotion

It is very common and natural to experience anger from time to time. Anger occurs when you feel threatened. We usually think of anger as negative, bad, or shameful because of how it feels when we experience it – unhappy, unpredictable, aggressive, impatient. But anger can be a useful emotion.

Anger can motivate you to fight for what you think is fair and good, or it can help you to solve a tough problem or situation. It is part of our fight-or-flight response that helps us fight and defend ourselves.

When Anger Becomes Unmanageable

Anger is not always a problem. Anger becomes an issue when it becomes frequent, unmanageable, or destructive. But when it gets out of control and harms you or others it may be time to seek help.

The Ripple Effect of Uncontrolled Anger

Uncontrolled anger can lead to a variety of negative consequences. It not only impacts your physical and mental health, it can also disrupt your relationships and work.

Physical Health Impacts – high blood pressure, weakened immune system, heart problems, and even an increased risk of stroke.

Mental Health Impacts – chronic stress, anxiety, depression, brain fog, self harm, substance use.

Relationship Impacts – Trust issues, fear, resentment and emotional detachment from others, difficulty forming or maintaining relationships.

Professional/work-related impacts  – low morale, decreased productivity, increased workplace conflict, and job loss.

If your livelihood has been impacted by anger in any way, it may be worth seeking help from a professional who can help you develop skills to manage your anger issues in a healthier way.

Customized Therapy Plans

Everyone is different in what triggers their anger, and in what strategies would be the most effective. Therefore, not one treatment plan is the same for every client when it comes to anger management. Cabot therapists tailor strategies to each individual. Personalized plans will take the following into consideration for every client:

  • Identify unique triggers and learn what causes them to lead to anger.
  • Reduce stress. Learn how to manage stress that triggers anger or that occurs as a result of anger.
  • Develop healthy coping skills and response techniques.
  • Improve effective communication skills.
  • Learn how to deal with conflict in a more productive way.

Integrative Therapeutic Techniques

Our clinicians utilize a variety of therapeutic techniques in anger management treatment. CBT, mindfulness and relaxation techniques are particularly effective in anger management therapy. Our integrative treatment gives you support from all angles to better manage your mental health.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is highly effective for anger management. CBT focuses on reframing negative thought patterns and teaches practical strategies to promote positive behavior change. CBT also provides tools to manage symptoms and is helpful for building self confidence.

Mindfulness involves paying attention to the present moment without judgment. Techniques such as mediation or deep breathing help lower stress levels. Mindfulness is effective because it puts space between you and your anger, and allows you to focus on improved ways to respond. Mindfulness is a good way to become aware of how you’re feeling so that you can express yourself in a healthy way.

Relaxation techniques help calm the body and reduce tension and stress. Similar to mindfulness, methods of relaxation may include breathwork, progressive muscle relaxation, yoga, or tai chi.

Other therapeutic practices that may be utilized in treatment include family therapy, cognitive restructuring, positive psychology, communication skills building, and many more. Treatment methods will vary depending on your unique needs.

Benefits of Anger Management Therapy

Anger management therapy has multiple and varied benefits beyond changing how you handle yourself in stressful situations. It can help mend and improve relationships, reduce stress and increase self-confidence, and help with better decision-making.

Improved Relationships

Anger management can help you build healthier connections at home and at work. Therapy for anger issues will teach you how to communicate and handle conflicts more productively. You will learn to express your emotions without fear, and you will learn to let go of the weight of anger and bitterness, and forgive yourself and others.

Enhanced Emotional Well-being

Anger therapy enhances emotional well-being by teaching people skills to manage anger and stress. Clients will feel less stressed, and have more self-control when it comes to their emotions. As a result, stress-related health issues will improve, such as sleep, blood pressure, and immunity.

Better Decision-Making Skills

Anger clouds judgment and can lead to rash decisions and impulsivity. Anger therapy helps you learn to regulate your emotions and be more thoughtful in your responses.

Success Stories and Testimonials

Client Experiences

Clients who have been treated at Cabot have experienced success over debilitating, destructive or harmful anger. One client arrived after experiencing intense anger following a trauma in their life. They found themselves lashing out at loved ones, fighting violent instincts, and suffering from a very short temper. After working with their therapist at Cabot, they learned to recognize some of the triggers for their anger. While they couldn’t prevent the feeling itself (because it is part of a healthy life), they learned to acknowledge and accept the feeling, while choosing different responses and reactions. They discovered the utility of breathing and other relaxation techniques to mitigate the worst of the anger, and addressed the trauma that lay at the root of the anger itself. After some work in therapy, they found that they still experienced the whole spectrum of emotions, but no longer felt anger on a daily basis, didn’t feel it as intensely as they used to,  nor felt afraid of it, as they knew how to address it in a healthy way.

Anger Management Tips

Anger often needs an outlet. While you’re waiting to start therapy, finding a way to express your feelings can be helpful. Helpful strategies you can begin to use in daily life to help manage anger include the following:

Physical activity – take a walk, go for a run, bike, swim. Movement can be an outlet for pent up negative energy while also providing space to calm down before reacting.

Breath work – Taking a few deep breaths is a quick and very accessible way to calm your nervous system. You can take time to focus on breathing literally anywhere. Deep, long, and deliberate breaths work to decrease the stress hormones and bring on the feel-good hormones.

Express your feelings – getting your thoughts out of your head before responding to the anger can help. Journaling, talking about it with a trusted and neutral confidant, and even artistic expression, such as painting, drawing, poetry, etc. can be helpful when you need space to clear your emotions prior to reacting to them.

Avoidance – if you are aware of what is triggering your anger, it may be best to avoid the trigger while you are learning coping skills. Whether it be a person, the news, or social media – walk away, put it down, and don’t turn it on to keep yourself from being triggered.

FAQs Section

While anger is a normal and even healthy emotion, if it becomes intense and doesn’t go away, or if it interferes with your daily life, health, or relationships it may be a problem.

You might consider anger management therapy if you experience any of the following:

  • You anger quickly and easily
  • Your relationships have been affected by your anger.
  • Loved ones or colleagues have expressed concern over your anger tendencies
  • You self-medicate with drugs or alcohol to calm you down.
  • When you become angry, your body responds with physical symptoms like headaches, blood pressure spikes, or tightness in your chest.
  • You have symptoms like high stress, frequent irritability, depression, anxiety, or feelings of guilt after an angry episode.
  • You can’t let go of your anger, hold grudges, or think about how you could “get back” at someone.
  • Your anger is uncontrolled, and you have become aggressive or violent toward others.

Depending on the person and the severity of the anger issues, therapy can last a few sessions, or it may take several months. Everyone needs something different, so there is no recommended timeframe.

If you are committed to your healing, you may pick up new skills quickly. Practicing those will allow you to see and feel benefits sooner rather than later.

Therapy with Cabot is confidential. We are committed to your privacy and trust.
