Improve Your Self-Esteem with our Effective, Scientifically Based Techniques in Minneapolis and Edina

Self-esteem influences nearly every aspect of our lives. How we feel about ourselves impacts our self-confidence, which impacts our relationships, our decisions, and our ambition. Without healthy self-esteem, our overall life satisfaction will be lacking.

In today’s world, self-esteem is put to the test with the fast pace of the world, social media influence, and the need to “keep up.”  For many, self-esteem has plummeted, taking a toll on our mental health.

Self-esteem plays a pivotal role in personal development. How to understand and cultivate self-esteem is a skill for survival in today’s world.

What is Self-Esteem?

Self-esteem is directly related to the confidence we have in our own value, worth, and abilities. It influences how we perceive ourselves and encompasses our beliefs about ourselves.

Someone with high self-esteem is often optimistic and will feel capable even when life gets hard. Someone with low self-esteem often feels uncertain and negative about their abilities and self-worth.

Self-esteem can impact your daily life in many ways. How we feel about ourselves will affect our mental and emotional health, how we make decisions, and the quality of our relationships, It affects our overall sense of well-being

Self-esteem impacts our ability to cope and handle adversity, and our outlook on life in general.

Signs and Symptoms of Low Self-Esteem

Common signs of low self-esteem include the following:

  • Extremely self-critical feelings. Using words like, stupid, fat, or ugly to describe themselves.
  • Negative or critical self-talk (i.e.: I’m so stupid, I can’t do anything right, I’m not good at it, so why should I try, etc)
  • Difficulty accepting compliments
  • Downplaying or ignoring positive qualities
  • Feeling inferior to others
  • Being a “people pleaser”
  • Feeling needy or desperate
  • Comparing themselves to others
  • “Playing small” or hiding, trying to blend in so they won’t stand out

Low self-esteem affects your quality of life and sense of well-being in many ways, including:

  • Persistent negative feelings, such as sadness, depression, anxiety, anger, shame or guilt.
  • Fear of “putting yourself out there” or trying new things.
  • Struggling to build quality relationships (either accepting poor treatment from others, or conversely, bullying or mistreating others, or isolating and becoming reclusive).
  • Lack of resilience: giving up easily or being unable to cope with challenging situations
  • Self-doubt, which prevents you from trying new things
  • No longer caring about yourself to the point of engaging in risky behaviors as a way to impress others, such as alcohol or drug use, or sexual promiscuity

The Impact of Self-Esteem on Mental Health

Self-esteem is a crucial part of our mental health and overall well-being. The connection between self-esteem and mental health is strong.

Low self-esteem is associated with a variety of mental health conditions. Most commonly, it is associated with conditions such as anxiety, depression, eating disorders, and antisocial behaviors.

Having these conditions can lead to low self-esteem, just as having low self-esteem can lead to these conditions. The cyclical nature of these conditions can be quite disheartening to experience.

Improving self-esteem can play a significant role in mental health treatment, and addressing it as a root cause of mental health conditions is essential to recovery.

By improving self-esteem, individuals will be more successful at managing symptoms and can better cope with their mental health condition, or recover altogether.

Evidence-Based Therapeutic Techniques

There are a variety of proven therapies that can help improve self-esteem. A few common techniques include:

  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) focuses on reframing negative thought patterns and teaches practical strategies to promote positive behavior change. CBT also provides tools to manage negative thoughts and is helpful for building self confidence.
  • Acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT) is similar to CBT in that it involves reframing or shifting perspective from self-judgment to compassion. ACT encourages individuals to accept their difficulties and take committed action towards behaving in line with their values and goals.
  • Mindfulness training equips you with the tools to navigate challenges by bringing attention to the present moment without judgment. Mindfulness is a practice of non-reactive awareness so that setbacks or failures no longer define your self-worth. Examples of mindfulness practices include positive affirmations, meditation, breathwork, and gratitude.

FAQs Section

Each client has their own unique needs when it comes to therapy for self-esteem, therefore there is no set time frame for how long one will be in treatment.

Therapy can last a few sessions, or it may take several months. A variety of factors will impact the length of time someone is in treatment, such as the severity of the self-esteem issues, their commitment and readiness for change, and the effectiveness of the therapeutic intervention.

If you are committed to your healing, you may pick up new skills quickly. Practicing those will allow you to see and feel the benefits of therapy sooner rather than later.

Therapy can be very helpful for improving self-esteem. A mental health professional can help you identify and address the factors that affect your self-esteem. A good therapist will help you focus on your strengths, and use cognitive restructuring techniques to build new positive thought patterns, so you can feel better.

Feeling good about yourself and having confidence is essential to living a satisfying and fulfilling life and reaching your greatest potential.

Cabot is committed to your privacy and trust. Therapy with Cabot is completely confidential.

We have strict privacy policies in place that our clinicians are trained to protect. Information discussed within a therapy session will be held confidential unless requested by the client.

Clients will receive written information about our privacy policies at their first visit. This information should explain that there are a few clear exceptions to the privacy rule, which include:

  • Client danger – if the client poses a danger to themselves or others
  • Child abuse – if the therapist suspects abuse of a child or an elderly or otherwise vulnerable adult
  • Court order – if the therapist is legally forced to share records by court order, subpoena, etc.
