ToggleCommon Reasons Trans and Nonbinary People Start Therapy
Trans and nonbinary adults in Minneapolis often start therapy while they explore their gender identity, plan how to come out, or cope with how others react. Some people know who they are and need help with family, work, or friends. Others are still sorting out what feels true. Both are good reasons to come in.
Gender is rarely the only thing on your mind. Many people also carry anxiety, depression, or trauma. Sometimes these grow out of rejection or stress; sometimes they were there long before. Different concerns often call for different approaches, because what helps with panic attacks isn’t the same as what helps with an old trauma.
A first session is usually a conversation about your goals and what brought you in. It’s a good time to share the name and pronouns you want used. You decide how much to share and when.
Minneapolis winters matter here too. Limited daylight from November through February is a known driver of seasonal depression, and dark months can make low moods worse. If you notice your mood drops each winter, tell your therapist early so your plan can account for the season before it hits.
How to Find a Transgender Therapist in Minneapolis
To find a transgender therapist in Minneapolis, look for a licensed provider who lists gender-affirming care, accepts your insurance, and offers the session format you need.
- Check for gender-affirming care. Make sure the practice lists the service by name.
- Verify the license. Look up the therapist’s Minnesota license number on the state board website.
- Pick in person or online. Cabot has offices in Minneapolis and Edina, plus telehealth statewide.
- Confirm insurance. Ask whether your plan is accepted and who checks your benefits.
- Book online. Use self-scheduling so you don’t have to call.
- Prepare for session one. Write down your goals, your name, your pronouns, and any questions.
Choosing a Gender-Affirming Licensed Therapist
Choosing a licensed therapist is harder when you’re new to Minneapolis and don’t know any local providers yet. Many people in Loring Park and Whittier rent their homes and have moved here recently. If that sounds like you, you may not have a friend or doctor to point you toward someone you can trust. Looking at who is on the team, and what training they hold, is a good place to start.
Cabot Psychological Services has one team with a wide range of licenses: a doctoral-level licensed psychologist (PhD, LP), a licensed independent clinical social worker (LICSW), a licensed marriage and family therapist (LMFT), a licensed alcohol and drug counselor (LADC), and a licensed graduate social worker (LGSW). That mix matters if your needs change over time. You might start with anxiety and later want couples work or substance use support. With our team, you can often stay with the same practice instead of starting over somewhere new.
Amanda Mulfinger, PhD, LP, is the President and Owner of Cabot Psychological Services. Her Minnesota License number is #LP5029, and the practice has been open since 2010.
Every Minnesota license number is public. Before you book, you can search any of our clinicians on the matching state board website and see whether the license is active. It takes a few minutes.
Your Insurance Is Checked Before the First Session
Cabot Psychological Services checks your insurance coverage before your first appointment, so you know where you stand before you walk in. Cost and paperwork stop a lot of people from starting therapy, and we’d rather answer those questions up front than surprise you with a bill afterward.
We accept a broad range of plans, including Medicaid and Medicare, which many private psychology practices don’t take. Those plans get the same check before your first visit.
Deductibles and copays can be confusing, and you shouldn’t have to decode them on your own before you’ve even met your therapist.
One practical tip: if the name you use differs from the name on your insurance plan, tell us both. Insurance records often still show a legal or old name. Sharing both helps the claim go through, and it also tells your therapist what to call you.
Coverage is a real access issue close to our Minneapolis office. ZIP 55403 has a median household income of $58,895, which is below the broader Minneapolis-area median. For many people in that ZIP, therapy happens only if insurance pays for most of it, so we’d rather you know what your plan covers before you start.

What Gender-Affirming Therapy Sessions Look Like
Gender-affirming therapy sessions at Cabot Psychological Services are warm, collaborative, and free of judgment, with a licensed therapist who uses your name and pronouns. You’re the expert on your own identity. Your therapist brings tools to help with what’s hard.
Early on, you and your therapist choose which concern to start with. From there, your therapist can suggest methods that fit it. In CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy), you learn to spot thoughts that feed anxiety or low mood and test whether they hold up. DBT (Dialectical Behavior Therapy) builds skills for strong emotions and stressful moments. ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) helps you make room for hard feelings while still acting on what matters to you.
For past harm, we use trauma-informed care. That means your therapist watches for how trauma shows up and avoids pushing you too fast. Some clients also use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a structured method for processing painful memories. EMDR can stir up feelings for a while before they ease, which is one reason you set the pace and your therapist checks that you have coping skills in place first.
If you want, you can add Reiki or certified life coaching alongside your clinical care. These are optional and don’t replace therapy.
In-Person Sessions in Minneapolis and Edina, or Telehealth Statewide
Cabot Psychological Services offers in-person sessions at two offices and telehealth across all of Minnesota. The Minneapolis office works well for people who live in the city, while the Edina office is a closer fit for people in the southwest suburbs.
Telehealth reaches every part of the state. Many towns outside the Twin Cities have very few mental health providers. With telehealth, you can meet with a licensed therapist from home, no matter where in Minnesota you live.
Getting to the office is a real factor. If you live in Stevens Square or Loring Park and ride transit, Edina may be hard to reach without a car, and the Minneapolis office or online sessions will likely suit you better. Winter adds another layer. Ice on the sidewalks and dark evenings can make a trip across town feel like too much, and telehealth lets you keep your appointment on those nights. The tradeoff is that you’ll need a private, quiet spot at home, so plan where you’ll sit before your session.
You can book through SimplePractice online and choose your own time, with no phone call needed.
Support for Partners, Families, and Life Changes
Cabot Psychological Services supports Minneapolis couples and families who are adjusting together when someone comes out or transitions. The people close to you are adjusting too, and talking it through with a therapist can help you stay connected while everyone catches up.
For couples, we offer LGBTQ+ relationship counseling and communication coaching. These sessions focus on how you talk to each other, especially about hard topics like changing roles, new names, or fears about the future.
For families, Craig Norvell, MA, LMFT, provides marriage and family therapy. His Minnesota License number is #LMFT2363. Family sessions can help when a parent and child see things very differently. We also offer parent-child conflict support for families stuck in the same arguments.
Life transition counseling covers the big changes that often come with gender identity work, such as:
- Moving to a new city or home
- Starting a new job
- Coming out at work
You don’t need a partner or family member to get started. In ZIP 55403, the average household is roughly 1.35 people, so many people near our Minneapolis office live alone or with one other person. You can begin with individual sessions. If you later want a partner or family member to join, your therapist can help plan when and how to bring them in.
