Recognizing Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder is a mood disorder. It is characterized by intense swings in mood, energy, and behavior. Typically a person with bipolar will cycle between periods of emotional highs and deep depressive lows. Bipolar is manageable with treatment.
At Cabot we take a holistic and personalized approach to treating bipolar disorder, combining lifestyle management practices, talk therapy, and medication referrals. We offer bipolar treatment and therapy services online and in-person in the Minneapolis and Edina areas.
Understanding Bipolar Disorder
Bipolar disorder was once referred to as “manic depression.” Individuals with this chronic mental health condition experience extreme mood swings, cycling between episodes of “mania,” or emotional highs, and episodes of depression. These mood shifts can last for hours, days, weeks or months. They can be disruptive to daily functioning as well. Between episodes, a person’s mood is usually stable.
Bipolar disorder is not experienced the same by everyone. For some, the cycles will somewhat follow a pattern of highs and lows. Others may go for long periods of time, sometimes years, between cycles.
There are several types of bipolar disorder. The three most common include:
- Bipolar I – at least one episode of highs (mania) that last at least a week. Depressive episodes will usually occur as well, but not always.
- Bipolar II – a pattern of major depressive episodes and at least one episode of hypomania, a milder version of mania that lasts a few days rather than a week or more.
- Cyclothymia – a milder form of bipolar where swings are less severe, but chronic. A person may experience alternating periods of depression and elevated mood for a year or more.
There are other types of bipolar disorders that may be caused by certain drugs or alcohol. Medical conditions, like multiple sclerosis (MS), thyroid disease, stroke, and Cushing’s disease can also cause bipolar related symptoms.
The average age of onset occurs around 25 years and frequently occurs in adolescence. However, the disorder can affect anyone at any age.
Common Symptoms of Bipolar
People who have bipolar disorder shift between periods in which they feel overly happy and energized (mania) or irritable, and other periods of feeling down, hopeless, or low-energy (depression). Between those periods, their mood is usually stable.
Bipolar symptoms have overlap with other mental health conditions, like depression. Whereas depression only has one phase, Bipolar has two phases that repeat in a pattern, shifting between a period of depression and a period of mania.
Mania is an exaggerated or reckless form of “happiness,” such as:
- Being overly friendly, more talkative than usual, or speaking rapidly
- Acting or talking inappropriately
- Engaging in risky and reckless behavior, such as overspending, unsafe sex, or substance abuse
- Lacking social inhibitions
- Acting rudely or aggressively
During a depressive episode, one may experience an exaggeratedly low mood, including:
- Loss of interest in usual activities
- Feeling sad, empty, worthless or hopeless
- Trouble concentrating or making decisions
- Sleep issues–not wanting to get out of bed, insomnia, or sleeping too much
- Changes in appetite
The Impact on Daily Living
Bipolar disorder affects the way a person thinks, feels, and behaves. The highs and lows of bipolar not only disrupt your ability to function in daily life, but also affect how you interact and communicate with others.
Mood swings, impulsivity, and withdrawal that come with bipolar disorder can put a strain on relationships and make holding down a job difficult. If left unmanaged, bipolar can lead to serious problems, including substance abuse, financial difficulties, interpersonal issues, and increased risk of more serious mental health concerns, like self-harm or thoughts of suicide.

The Importance of Professional Help
Living with bipolar disorder will feel much more manageable with the help of a professional. A trained therapist can help you learn skills and strategies to cope with and manage troubling symptoms and give you an improved quality of life.
Risks of Going Untreated with Bipolar Disorder
Without proper care, untreated bipolar disorder can negatively affect a person’s life in nearly every area, including:
- Poor interpersonal relationships
- Suffering school or work performance
- Substance use
- Financial trouble
- Legal problems
- Self harm, suicide or suicide attempts
With the right treatment, people living with bipolar can have a fulfilling and productive quality of life.
Benefits of Therapy
Therapy is an integral part of a holistic treatment plan for bipolar disorder. Therapy can improve quality of life by helping clients understand their condition and better communicate their needs related to the condition. Patients who engage in talk therapy as part of their bipolar treatment often experience the following:
- Less isolation and improved social well-being
- Stabilized mood
- Ability to manage symptoms
- Better developed coping strategies
- Ability to identify triggers and warning signs
- Decreased risk of relapse
Early Intervention Matters
The advantage of getting help early with a bipolar diagnosis is improved client outcomes. Studies show early stages of bipolar may be more responsive to treatment and may need less aggressive therapies than when bipolar disorder is left untreated.
Early intervention has also been shown to reduce the occurrence of relapse, and prevent potentially irreversible harm to clients, such as cognitive impairment.

Every client is different, as are the contributing factors for their disorder. Long-term recovery from bipolar is much more likely when we can identify and understand the underlying contributing factors for each individual.
Personalized Assessments
The therapists at Cabot Psychological Services will evaluate your unique situation. We will review the following aspects of your health with you as part of the diagnostic process:

It combines the elements of cognitive-behavior therapy, group therapy, and education to inform clients about early warning signs to look for in order to improve adherence to treatment.
The goal is to arm clients and families with knowledge and support so they can better understand and cope with the illness. Benefits of psychoeducation far exceed treatment adherence. Benefits of psychoeducation include:
- Provides clarity and empowerment for self-advocacy
- Helps Identify triggers and learn coping strategies
- Promotes client engagement in therapy and treatment

- Recognizing signs of a bipolar episode
- Helping to manage conflicts
- Improving relationships.
Family counseling is also referred to as Family Focused Therapy, or FFT.
FFT typically includes:
- Education about the symptoms, triggers, and treatment of the client’s bipolar.
- Learning techniques to improve communication and reduce conflicts
- Cultivating collaboration by working together to face challenges and obstacles
Family counseling is well known for improving treatment outcomes for clients:
- Faster recovery from bipolar episodes
