Max Hunter, MPH, MSW, LICSW

Therapy can mean different things to different people. For me, therapy is a safer space to support exploration, processing, and gaining understanding. I use a trauma-informed and strengths-based approach with elements of CBT and DBT to build rapport, create trust, set short/long-term goals, and collaborate to achieve desired outcomes. I strive to create a therapeutic alliance grounded in non-judgment, open-mindedness, compassion, and unconditional positivity. Together we can face fears, challenge stigma, overcome self-limiting beliefs, explore hopes/dreams, and set goals for self-improvement.

I am an LICSW with experience working with diverse patient populations in outpatient, inpatient, and emergency department treatment settings. I specialize in working with people living with SPMI, psychosis, anxiety, borderline personality disorder, and mood disorders. In addition to social work, I have specialized training in sexual health with a masters in public health that focuses on community health promotion and sexual health, and a certificate in sex therapy from the University of Minnesota. This training supports my passion for having crucial conversations about sex, gender, identity, and relationships.

Life is hard and, in this current climate, increasingly hard for people who have identities that are marginalized, ostracized, and victimized. The prejudice abets division and fear that wounds ourselves and our communities. The current negativity has created a storm – and I strive to be a lighthouse to beacon safety and create a haven for reconnection. As a transnonbinary and queer identified clinician, I am impassioned to be of service to LGBTQIA2S+ individuals. Community is healing and together we are stronger. If you are looking for support, please reach out to schedule with me. I look forward to working together.
